Book Review: Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell

Rating: 5/5 stars 🌟

"But you cannot grow if you are bitter." - Courtney Peppernell

I am so happy that I came across this book in Waterstones; this is more than just another poetry anthology. It taught me things that I didn't know before about myself; the quote above hit me like a ton of bricks. Struck, I had to stare at it for a minute or two as I evaluated my life. Courtney is a brilliant writer and each chapter provides us with something new to sit with; causing us to dig deep. I really liked that it's divided into sections so that you can read them when you feel you need them most. The chapter "If you need encouragement" could have really helped me when I was about 14/15; I wish I had this book then and am so happy to have it now.

This book is a mixture of short and long form poetry with insightful quotes throughout and I really loved all forms equally. This has to be the best poetry anthology that I've ever read; touching my soul in ways I was not prepared for. It's also a nice length with 256 pages. Although, I usually find most anthologies rather short but this one was absolutely perfect. Courtney is clearly an amazing person and has a kind soul and it's always great to have kind and amazing LGBTQ+ representatives like her. She started as an indie author and has now been published by Andrews McMeel (one of the top poetry publishers currently) which is so inspiring for other indie authors out there.

I'm really excited to read more of Courtney Peppernell's books and really recommend that you do too!
